Fall is sort of magical- so when it comes to creating a seasonal favorite that captures the magic of cooler temperatures and those vibrant fall leaves FatBoy just had to unleash the Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream Sandwich. We’ve combined pumpkin puree, cinnamon and nutmeg with our rich and creamy ice cream to create a flavor subtle enough to take you back to childhood memories of jumping into piles of leaves and picking out the biggest pumpkin in the patch.
After all, we can’t let lattes have all the fun.
So with all this talk of pumpkin spice, we were curious; what’s with the craze over the fall flavor favorite and where did it all begin?
Pumpkin Spice: ‘Merica
The history of Pumpkin Spice is a story rooted in American history, our favorite kind. Turns out early American settlers, as early as 1620, made pumpkin pies with the same spices that make up the famous pumpkin spice concoction we know today. It wasn’t until 1936 that this blend of spices was officially tagged as “pumpkin spice”, when the Washington Post published a seasonal recipe called “Pumpkin Spice Cakes”.
Later, in the 1950’s, spice companies caught on and took the irresistible blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove and allspice, packaged it together and began selling the blend as “Pumpkin Pie Spice”. By the 1960’s, the mixture had been simplified to “Pumpkin Spice” and home cooks began using it in breads, cupcakes and other confectionaries.
The Pumpkin Spice Craze Begins
Fall-time baking magic remained in the home kitchen for the most part until the mid-90’s, when the marketplace began to capitalize on the trend. In 1995 during the novelty candle boom, pumpkin spice scented candles began populating store shelves. The appetite-whetting smells inspired all kinds of concoctions and ramped up when coffee shops around the country began to incorporate the pumpkin spice blend into their coffee. Soon, sugar and cream naturally joined the ingredient list and there the iconic pumpkin spice latte was born.
With an irresistible flavor such a hit in coffee houses, food manufacturers jumped on board and the rest is modern history. Now the aisles of your grocery store have many of your favorite products with a “limited edition” yummy pumpkin spice flair… including your favorite ice cream sandwiches!
